Have you seen the headlines?
Honest food labelling is all over the press at the moment. Some meat and dairy labels give the impression that animals are raised outdoors in sunshine and on grass. In reality, many are permanently confined to cramped, windowless sheds for their short, miserable lives.
We are being misled, and the press is picking up on it.
Now we need political action
If you live in the UK, please email your MP today. Clear labels would allow consumers to choose between factory farmed and higher welfare animal products. But instead of being given a choice, we are being kept in the dark.
There are no legal requirements for labels to tell us how animals are treated – apart from those on eggs which are clear and have worked well. Politicians should seize this moment to introduce mandatory method of production labelling on all meat and dairy products.
They have the power
You can help by asking your MP to sign a proposed parliamentary Motion to bring about honest labelling. If your MP is either a Defra minister or their opposite number you can ask them directly to introduce honest labelling – it's in their power.
Compassion in World Farming is part of a coalition called Labelling Matters that works to ensure meat and dairy products are clearly labelled by farming system. To find out more about Labelling Matters, and how clear, honest labelling can benefit consumers, farmers and animals, please click here.
