Call on the Scottish Government to Ban Live Exports

In 2017, approximately 5,500 Scottish calves endured long, harrowing journeys by road and sea to Ireland, with many travelling onwards to Spain and Italy.

However, we’re now getting heartening cross-party support from Scottish politicians to press for a change. So, we want to bring this issue to a vote in Holyrood – let’s make sure that Scotland stands for a clear end to this appalling trade.

A motion is being launched in Holyrood for debate, calling on the Government to back a ban on live export.

Will you take a moment to contact your MSPs today and urge them to back the motion? Ask them to take a stand against live exports, and to support a Holyrood debate with an opportunity to vote for change.

Live exports for slaughter or fattening are cruel and unnecessary. And, when animals leave the UK, we lose the ability to care for their welfare. The trade in live animals should be replaced with one in meat products.

A ban on live animal exports from the UK would not prohibit any transport from the Scottish Islands to the mainland, or to Northern Ireland, which makes up the bulk of the trade in Scotland. A live exports ban would therefore not cause “substantial harm” to the Scottish farming industry, as Fergus Ewing has claimed.

Will you ask your MSPs to press for a vote in Holyrood and back a ban on live exports for slaughter and fattening?

Please take action today.
