As tuna farming expands, increasing numbers of wild Atlantic bluefin tuna are being captured from the ocean to supply the industry – a practice that has already pushed the species to the brink of collapse.
Atlantic bluefin tuna are wild, migratory animals that are fundamentally unsuited to life in captivity. There is no humane way to farm them. Tuna farming also depends on catching vast quantities of other wild fish for feed, placing further pressure on already stressed marine ecosystems and the coastal communities that depend on them.
The expansion of tuna farming is a warning sign of a much wider problem. As industry interest expands to other carnivorous species such as octopus, we risk accelerating biodiversity loss and further exploiting wild animals and oceans that are already under immense strain.
This is why we are calling on world leaders, including the UK Government, to keep their commitments to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 by introducing an immediate moratorium on tuna farms.
