End the Cage Age for Hens

Respond to the UK Government's hen cages consultation today

The UK Government has launched a public consultation on whether it should ban cages for hens. The consultation closes on the 9th March 2026.

For the sake of vulnerable farmed animals, it is vital that the UK Government implement a ban on these cruel systems. Please respond to Defra’s consultation, urging them to End the Cage Age for hens in the UK.

The case for ending hen cages:

  1. Around 7 million hens are still kept in cages across the UK, with little more space than an A4 sheet of paper.
  2. They don’t have a life worth living, unable to forage in the dirt, dustbathe, see the light of day or fully stretch their wings.
  3. The physical discomfort and mental anguish this causes can result in harmful behaviours such as feather pecking.
  4. Better alternatives already exist, with 82% of UK eggs now coming from cage-free systems.
  5. Other countries have already acted to end cages for laying hens including France, Luxemburg, Austria and Germany. The UK is lagging behind!
