How you can help

Respond to the UK Government's Labelling Consultation today

The UK Government has launched a public consultation on whether it should introduce mandatory food labelling for country of origin and method of production on chicken, pork and eggs.

Currently, the lack of mandatory honest labelling currently means that low-welfare products can be misleadingly labelled and promoted as higher welfare to consumers, and to the detriment of millions of factory farmed animals.

For the sake of vulnerable farmed animals, it is vital that the UK Government implement mandatory animal welfare labelling laws. Please respond to Defra urging them to make honest labelling compulsory across all meat and dairy products sold in the UK.

Would your friends also want to support animal welfare? Please ask them to respond to the consultation today and add their voice for honest labels.

The case for Honest Labelling:

  1. Misleading terms and images of the idyllic countryside may imply higher-welfare standards, whilst masking an ugly reality of intensive, indoor factory farming.
  2. The lack of mandatory method of production labelling makes it very difficult for consumers to choose to purchase products which match their values and expectations.
  3. Mandatory method of production labelling will ensure higher-welfare farmers have their better farming standards officially recognised.
  4. UK consumer demand shifted significantly towards higher-welfare and free-range eggs following the introduction of method of production labelling, benefitting millions of animals every year.

Will you call on the UK Government to introduce mandatory honest labels for meat and dairy? Email your response to the consultation now.

Ask DEFRA to make honest labelling mandatory

Without compulsory honest method of production labelling, the packaging of factory farmed meat and dairy products may mislead shoppers, undermining consumer choice and the products of higher-welfare farmers.

If you live in the UK, please respond to Defra’s consultation today. Email your reply outlining the importance of honest labelling for animal welfare and consumers.

When you click submit, you’ll be able to review and edit your email before sending it. Thank you!
