Trade Deals and Agriculture Bill

We'd like to say a huge thanks to the 16,448 dedicated supporters who emailed their MP to call for UK standards to not be undercut by any imports permitted as a result of free trade agreements signed as we left the EU.

Also a huge thank you to the 18,742 dedicated supporters who emailed their MP, calling for the Agriculture Bill to ensure Britain is a global leader in animal welfare as the UK left the EU.

On Tuesday 8th December, we held a virtual event to honour the 77,000 compassionate people who signed the open letter and sent a united message to the Government: the UK must not import cruelty.

The Agriculture Bill had its Report Stage and 3rd Reading on the 13th May and went to the Lords. 277 MPs voted for the amendment – including 22 Conservative politicians who defied the Whip and rebelled against the Government.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to get the legislation changed. It did lead to a Government statement that ‘inspections’ would prevent the import of hormone-treated beef or chemically-treated chicken.

Another amendment would have required the Government to introduce mandatory labelling of meat and dairy products by method of production, helping shoppers be better informed about the food they buy, and potentially improving welfare for millions of farm animals.

The amendment was not voted on, but the Defra Minister announced that the Government would launch a consultation on labelling after the Brexit transition period.

We’ll be sure to keep the pressure on, and your continued support will be vital to help ensure that Britain has world-class animal welfare standards.
