SAY NO TO LIVE EXPORTS ON PASSENGER FERRIES

Following Celtic Link Ferries’ proposal to open a transport route for live exports from Portsmouth to France, there have been worrying attempts to get lorries carrying sheep out of Portsmouth.

Despite public and parliamentary calls to end the trade of live animals and the wealth of scientific evidence showing that animals suffer during these long journeys, Celtic Link Ferries’ has become the first passenger ferry since 1994 to take part in this inhumane trade.

Compassion condemns the trade in live animals and asks supporters to lobby Celtic Link Ferries’ to change their policy and prohibit this cruel and unnecessary trade.

I have been appalled to hear that Celtic Link Ferries is proposing to support the cruel and inhumane export of live farm animals. I am writing to advise you that neither I, nor my friends, will consider travelling on Celtic Link until the company ceases to carry animals destined for slaughter or fattening.

Although crossing times on the Portsmouth to Cherbourg route are relatively short, they represent the start of a journey which can end as far away as Spain and last as long as 70 hours. Scientific evidence has proven that long journeys cause considerable pain and distress. Animals are frequently transported in overcrowded conditions, with insufficient food, water or rest, which can result in exhaustion, dehydration and injury.
 
Many leading ferry companies, including P&O, SeaFrance, Brittany Ferries and Norfolk Line have recognised these important welfare issues and do not carry shipments of live animals. I urge you to follow their lead and urgently reconsider your policy towards this needless and cruel trade.
