ANIMAL WELFARE IN EGYPT

Please write urgently to the Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr Ahmed Mahmoud Mohammed Nazif, asking him to bring forward draft animal welfare legislation to the Egyptian Parliament for adoption.

Please ask him to ensure that this legislation properly protects all animals including farm animals at all stages of their lives, including during transport and at slaughter. Please impress on the Prime Minister that the recent killing of pigs has brought shame on his country and that the international community is looking for the Egyptian authorities make sure such scenes are never repeated.

I have been most distressed in the last three weeks to see reports and videos of horrrific pig  killing taking place in Egypt including scenes of live pigs being transported several layers deep in trucks and then dumped in mass graves to be killed by quicklime and other substances. Egyptian media reported that the pigs screamed for up to 40 minutes as they are killed by the chemicals. This killing was described as 'pointless and unnecessary' from a public health point of view by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

I am told that the killing has now stopped but not before 160,000 pigs have been made to suffer in such appalling ways. This episode has brought shame on Egypt and it is now up to  you and your government to make sure that this never happens again.

To this effect, I urge you to bring forward the Animal Welfare Act which was submitted to you two years ago. This would ensure that the welfare of all animals in Egypt is fully protected . This should protect farm animals during all stages of their rearing, transport and slaughter.

I look forward to receiving an assurance that this legislation will be enacted and enforced as soon as possible.
