EU sow stalls: The suffering continues
According to data from the European Commission, as few as 13 EU Member States may be fully compliant with the ban on sow stalls that came into force in January 2013. Take action today – demand an end to this illegal cruelty.
How many farms in Europe are keeping pigs illegally in cages?
This seemed like a simple question. But, nine months after the partial ban on the sow stall came into force in the EU, the European Commission refused to give us a straight answer.
What is more, it seems the Commission isn’t even sure how many nations are breaking this law. As you’ll see from our map below, 13 countries are reported to be fully compliant. But five are ‘under investigation’, whilst information for Croatia – the latest entrant to the EU – is nowhere to be seen. What we do know, though, is that at least nine EU Member states are definitely harbouring illegal cruelty.

Given that Member States had over a decade to prepare for the ban, the illegal use of sow stalls is a complete and utter disgrace. But there are two things you can do right now to help pigs:
Use the form on the right to email the Agriculture Ministers in nine law-breaking countries, urging them to enforce the sow stall ban.
Share this action and infographic map on Facebook and Twitter to spread the word about the shocking breaches of this vital animal welfare law.
Please spare just a few moments now to help Europe’s sows. It is critical that every EU nation accepts and properly enforces the ban on using sow stalls throughout a pig’s pregnancy. These inhumane, out-dated contraptions have no place in a civilised society.
Take action for Europe’s sows
A letter will be sent in your name to each of the Agriculture Ministers in non-compliant Member States, in their own language.
I am concerned that [name of country] is still not properly enforcing the EU partial ban on sow stalls that came into force on 1 January 2013. This is unacceptable as this ban was adopted in 2001 – farmers and the government have had ample time to prepare for the change to group housing of sows. I urge you to now enforce the ban without any further delay.
