Take action: a crucial moment in the battle against cloning

Right now the EU Commission is drafting new proposed legislation on cloning for food production. Cloning has severe welfare implications, both for surrogate mothers and the clones themselves. Take action today.

Overwhelming evidence proves that animal cloning causes untold suffering. There is an increased risk of abnormal and difficult births, and rates of death in the womb are high. Of the clones that do survive birth, a significant proportion die very young from such health problems as heart failure, respiratory problems, liver or kidney failure, weaknesses in their immune systems, and deformities. This is simply unacceptable.

The European Commission is currently drafting new proposed legislation on the cloning of animals for food production. You can help us get this cruel practice banned in the EU.

Dr Tonio Borg was appointed Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy in late 2012. He is responsible for overseeing the new cloning legislation. Help ensure that the full weight of public opposition to cloning for food production is top of his To Do list.

To Dr Tonio Borg, the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy

I understand that the Commission is preparing proposed new legislation on cloning for food production. Cloning has severe welfare implications, both for surrogate mothers and the clones themselves. I urge you to propose a ban on:

  • the carrying out of cloning for food production
  • the use of clones and their offspring in EU farming
  • the sale of meat and dairy products from clones and their offspring

And to ensure this ban is reflected in the new legislation.
